Ascending connections related to hearing and balance.

Ascending connections for hearing

As a general principle, lesions in the auditory system cause deafness when they are close to the input side, and gradually blend into aphasia as they converge upon their central target, the auditory cortex.

Ascending connections for the vestibular system.

Auditory and vestibular cortex

Central vestibular systems also have many cross-connections, 3 in the brainstem and one in the cortex (Kirsch et al, 2015). Unilateral vestibular cortex lesions do not usually manifest with vertigo, nausea, nystagmus or falls (Dieterich and Brandt, 2015).
